Hiring Process Overview

  • Vacancy Announced: Employment announcements are posted on the Job
    Opportunities page of this website, and other online platforms, including LinkedIn and Facebook.
  •  Applications are Received: All applications for vacancies with Berkeley County government must be submitted to: Berkeley County Commission, 400 West Stephen Street, Suite 201, Martinsburg, WV, 25401.
  • Applications are Reviewed: An application may be rejected if it is not complete or is received after the specified closing date (we do honor post-mark date on applications submitted by postal mail). Each applicant will be notified by mail regarding the selection process.
  • Interviews are held: Examination for positions announced vary by position and may include an evaluation of training and experience, personal and/or group interview or performance test(s). Berkeley County does not reimburse travel expenses incurred to attend a scheduled interview.
  • Contingent Offer of Employment: An offer of employment is made to the candidate who is determined to be the best match for the position. The offer is contingent upon successful completion of satisfactory pre-employment screens. 
  • Pre-Employment Screen: Prior to beginning work, pre-employment screens will be completed with any candidate that accepts a contingent offer of employment. This process may include a review of some or all of the following checks: background investigation, psychological examination, physical examination and/or drug screening.
  • Onboarding: Berkeley County is an “at-will” employer. However, new employees normally serve a probationary period of six (6) months before attaining regular status. The length of the probationary period may vary depending on the position and may be extended depending on performance. The probationary period is considered part of the examination process to determine the employee’s fitness for the position in which he/she is placed.
