Recycling and Solid Waste
About the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority
Authorized by Chapter 22C of the West Virginia Code, the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority is charged with developing programs that address litter and solid waste control, including source reduction efforts, recycling, reuse and materials recovery. Landfilling is the waste management option of last resort. The county's solid waste programs has full time and part time staff and are aligned with a host of cooperatives with private and public entities to provide the
most comprehensive solid waste program in the four-state region.
History
The Solid Waste Authority was established on January 1, 1989 by the Berkeley County Commission. Since that time, BCSWA has methodically worked to implement a series of education, enforcement and solid waste collection programs. Components of those programs were implemented with the primary objective of following the integrated solid waste management hierarchy mandated by the West Virginia Solid Waste Management Act.
The Solid Waste Authority is comprised of a five-member Board of Directors. The Board meets monthly at Solid Waste Authority office at 19 Recovery Way.
Board members:
Mark Barney (Chair)
Michele Gula Atha (Secretary)
Jim Whitacre (Commission Liaison)
Clint Hogbin (Member)
Lou Scavnicky (Member)
Matthew Grove (Member)
Recycling Programs
If all morning newspapers read in the United States were recycled, 41,000 trees would be saved daily and 6 million tons of waste would never end up in landfills.
