MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (September 10, 2025) – Following extensive and deliberative review, the Berkeley County Museum Commission has retained the services of Mills Group of Morgantown, W.Va., to provide architecture and engineering services for the Commission’s regional museum project.
“This is an exciting first step in our efforts to develop a museum for the preservation and interpretation of Berkeley County’s rich and truly special history,” said Robert Mahaffey, chair of the Museum Commission board of directors.
The focus of the Museum Commission project is to preserve Eastern West Virginia history and culture for future generations.
“This project embodies our mission of blending modern design solutions with respect for historic character,” said Michael Mills, founding principal of Mills Group.
“We are proud to collaborate with Berkeley County Museum Commission and the citizens of Berkeley County to ensure these landmark buildings continue to tell the story of the region’s history.”
When created on May 15, 1772, Berkeley County comprised all of what is now Jefferson County and most of what is now Morgan County between Blue Ridge Mountain east of the Shenandoah River and Warm Springs Ridge immediately west of what became the Town of Bath/Berkeley Springs. Martinsburg served as the County seat for the Shenandoah Valley gateway region until Jefferson County was formed in 1801, followed by the creation of Morgan County in 1820.
Established as a legacy initiative of the Berkeley County 250th Commemoration, the Berkeley County Museum Commission is charged with overseeing the creation and operation of a regional museum and working to facilitate communication and coordination between museums and cultural historical organizations throughout the region.
